Aloha! My name is Jade Esmeralda and I am so grateful for the opportunity to share my voice here at Around the Grove. I am currently a senior at Salisbury University at the Universities at Shady Grove (USG), and my major is Exercise Science with a minor in Health.
I plan to graduate in May 2019, and my long-term goal is to pursue a career in physical therapy. In the future, I would like to combine my passion for dance, martial arts, health and rehabilitation by becoming a Doctor in Physical Therapy.
Two of my greatest passions in life are dance and capoeira, which is an Afro-Brazilian martial art. Since 2012, I have had the honor of being a part of a non-profit organization called Urban Artistry, Inc. Our mission is dedicated to the performance and preservation of art forms inspired by the urban experience and to serve as cultural ambassadors for communities that are often unsung.
Through our educational workshops, performances, and community events, Urban Artistry strives to fulfill our mission through collaborations that support artists’ past, present, and future. With the guidance of my mentor, Junious Brickhouse, I continue to learn about the cultural traditions of house dance culture, creative expression and the meaning of integrity.
I am also strongly passionate about training with Abadá Capoeira DC, with the mission to to promote, spread, and support Brazilian arts, culture, and the practice of Capoeira in the greater DMV area. Since 2015, I have trained with Professora Yara and the non-profit organization Abadá Capoeira DC.
This past summer, I just recently got married in Hawai’i to my partner of nine years. My husband, Michael Esmeralda, is also my classmate, and he is also enrolled in the same program as me. Together, we will continue to pursue our educational goals and look forward to graduating this spring.
Once again, I am incredibly grateful to be here, and I look forward to sharing a bit of my journey with you. Thank you everyone, and aloha!
