As the holiday’s approach us….

It’s important to shop small. As some of you may know, Small Business Saturday has already passed, but that doesn’t mean we need to stop supporting small businesses year-round. One of my favorite ways to shop small is to go to a farmer’s market! As the weather starts to get colder, a lot of farmers markets will pause during the colder months and will not re-open until the spring. However, the Olney Farmer’s and Artist’s Market is open EVERY Sunday from 9am to 1pm, year-round! So naturally, I just had to go and check it out. The market is located at 2801 Olney Sandy Spring Rd, Olney, MD 20832, and they have a ton of vendors! They have a lot of handmade goods, as well as baked goods, food trucks, fresh organic produce, fresh squeezed juices, meat and poultry, and so much more.

What I typically do first is I scope out the entirety of the market before I really decide what to purchase. I will also usually grab some sort of beverage to sip on, or a bite to eat while I walk around. This morning I saw PACHA MAMA JUICE CO. I decided to try the Tropical Sunrise fresh juice, and it did not disappoint! The guy that helped me was super sweet and informative. I learned a lot about turmeric and how it helps with hangovers!

I went on to purchase some fresh greens, sprouts, and then some meats form a local butcher up in Frederick. I then stumbled upon this empanada stand and let me tell you, these are some of the best empanadas I have ever had! They are called DMV Empanadas, and they have a huge variety to choose from! Now, I had some others stops this morning and I didn’t want my food to get cold, so I was told they sell frozen ones you can heat in the oven or the air fryer at home, so I opted for the frozen ones. I choose the shrimp with old bay and the steak and cheese options. As soon as I got home, I threw them into the oven at 350 degrees and after 15 minutes, they were ready. They also apparently have a location in Gaithersburg too which I will have to check out sometime soon.

All in all, today was a trip worthwhile, and I know I will definitely go back soon! Do you have a small business you’d like other students to support? Drop your information in the comments section below! As the semester comes to a close, and we start the new year, I wish everyone a safe, and happy holiday season and a very happy 2024!

It’s Officially December 1st …

Source: The Telegraph

which means that there’s only one month left of 2023. The end of the year, in my opinion, is a great time to reflect on the year you’ve had. I never really thought that New Year’s resolutions were something to take seriously. But I’m graduating in a few weeks, and I figured that 2024 could be a good time to start. In general, goal setting is something that I’ve been meaning to try. There’s still a good amount of time before the end of the year, which means it’s the perfect time to create New Year’s resolutions!! Giving yourself ample time to think of even just one resolution can allow you to really think about what you want to accomplish next year. I know it can be especially hard to keep up with resolutions/goals as students, but I still think it’s worth a try. You don’t even need to think of your own resolutions, because there are actually a ton of suggestions online.

Here are some quick tips that I plan on following when creating (and following through on) my New Year’s Resolution(s):

1. Be Specific: This might be a no brainer, but your resolutions have to be specific. For example, if you want to get more sleep each night, “sleep more” probably isn’t the best resolution to make. The more specific actions included in your resolution, the better.

2. Don’t Downplay Their Importance: There has to be a reason we choose the resolutions we do. They are, to some extent, important to us and who we want to be. When creating resolutions, think about how your life could change by even attempting to accomplish this goal.

Source: Destination Imagination

3. Hold Yourself Accountable and Stay Motivated: When trying to accomplish your resolution, think of the smallest, easiest step you can start with. Take note of the time, day, and date you plan on taking that first step, and then do it.

4. Don’t Bite Off More Than You Can Chew: Creating 10 New Year’s resolutions sounds great in theory, and if you can accomplish all 10, that’s great. However, it’s probably better to start with a few, or even just one. The resolutions also need to be realistic, so think about whether you have the resources (time, money, etc.) to accomplish them.

5. Understand It’s Going To Be Hard: Trying to accomplish your resolutions might make you feel uncomfortable, but that feeling typically comes with any type of change. You may encounter obstacles, so try to anticipate those obstacles as you create your resolutions.

If all else fails, there’s always next year!

A Wonderful Visit to Guatemala

This year, my thanksgiving break was different compared to previous years. Normally, my thanksgiving holiday consists of having dinner with my parents and brothers in Maryland, given that our extended family primarily lives in Guatemala. However, this year, I took a different turn and journeyed to Guatemala to visit my family. It was a great experience, as I got to explore many wonderful places across this beautiful country. From vibrant cultural spots to breathtaking natural landscapes, each place left a memory in my mind that I look back on with delight.

If you ever find yourself booking a trip to Guatemala, here are some of the spots that I visited on this trip, that I highly recommend you visit as well!

Monterrico Beach: This beach is situated in the town of Monterrico, located in the department of Santa Rosa, right on the Pacific coast of Guatemala. This beautiful beach is lined with volcanic black sand, and the sunsets are absolutely beautiful. This beach is very quiet and peaceful. It serves as a great weekend beach resort for many Guatemalans and tourists. This beach is known for sea turtle conservation, as they do sea turtle releases into the ocean every year from September to January.

Antigua: This is a beautiful city that was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. Antigua is known for its religious celebrations during Lent, Holy Week, and Easter. Antigua has tons of cultural and historical relevance in the country. It used to be the capital of the country until a volcanic eruption took over the city in 1773.

Panajachel: This city is the gateway to all of the beautiful small villages that surround Lake Atitlan. Lake Atitlan is the deepest volcanic lake in all of Central America. The view is absolutely breathtaking, as the lake is surrounded by volcanoes.

San Juan La Laguna: This is one of the many beautiful villages that surrounds Lake Atitlan. It is reachable by water taxi through the lake. From strolling the colorful streets, learning about traditional Mayan beekeeping techniques, and seeing chocolate made from scratch, there are many fun activities to take part in while you’re visiting.

Guatemala, a land of vibrant culture and natural wonders, is extremely beautiful and has so many wonderful places to be explored. There is much more to explore than just this list, but these places covered what I was able to visit in just eight short days.

Gifts You Want to Buy For Your Loved Ones

December is right around the corner, so do you know what that means? It’s time to think about the upcoming winter break and holiday festivities! (Yes, sigh, and final exams too). Christmas is still about a month away, but it’s never too late to consider the gifts you want to buy for your friends and family. Hopefully these suggestions will make your wallet hurt less.

Their favorite snack I’m speaking from personal experience, but hand me my favorite food and I can guarantee you that I won’t forget it. Hey, with the current inflation, I would even be happy to get meager crumbs. (But jokes aside) food of any kind is a great way to show your love and appreciation for the people around you.

Blankets You can never have too many blankets. Not only do they provide warmth and comfort, but your kind and thoughtful gesture will be relayed to your friends/family. Your recipient will appreciate you choosing something comfortable for the winter that you felt fit their style and personality.

Clothes (sweater, hoodies, shoes, etc.) Clothes can be expensive to purchase, but I’m sure your loved ones aren’t expecting you to spend a grand on the present you choose for them. Setting aside a budget that works for you, do some shopping online or in-person and find the best fit for them. You should have a general idea of the type of style your recipient prefers, so I’m sure they will love whatever you choose for them!

Gift cards Sometimes you just don’t know what to get, and that’s completely understandable! You’re valid for being indecisive which is why opting for a gift card which you know the recipient you’re gifting to loves or has the potential to enjoy is a great idea. This is not taking the easy way out, I promise. They will appreciate the gesture for sure.

Let’s make Chicha Morada!

With the holidays coming up and Thanksgiving being right around the corner all I can think about is warm foods and drinks! Today I wanted to share a recipe for a Peruvian drink that is perfect for sharing during the cold holiday weather!

Peruvian Chicha Morada is a beverage originated in the Andean regions of Peru made from dried purple corn, along with fruit and spices served over ice. This is a very popular drink and just for a little bit of historical background. In ancient times, this regal corn brew was considered more than just a simple drink but it was written in history that South Americans boiled the cobs to make medicine and used it for annual celebrations and divine offerings. Eventually, however, it became a popular drink served in restaurants and convenience stores everywhere.

It takes about 10 minutes to prepare and 45 minutes to cook. In total, this 55 minute drink starts with a bag of corn! Here are the ingredients you will need (for 8 servings):

After all the ingredients are prepped, you will then add all the fruits and spices to a large pot of water and heat it over high heat. Once the mixture reaches a boil reduce the heat to medium low and simmer for about 45 minutes. Once this is done, you can remove the pot from the heat and place it above a strainer, pouring the mixture through to transfer the mixture’s contents. Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature, before placing it in the refrigerator until cold. This is where you can then stir in the lime juice and sugar. The best part is you can take everything you strained from the pot, put it back in another pot of water, and start the process all over again, making batches from the leftovers.

Although this drink is traditionally served cold, it will not only make your stomach happy, but it will make your house smell amazing. Who knows, maybe the drink tastes good hot too! Try out this recipe for the holiday and Happy Thanksgiving!

Lighting Up Cozy Vibes: The Ambiance of Candles for Thanksgiving and Winter

Greetings, candle enthusiasts and cozy aficionados!

As the air turns crisper and Thanksgiving approaches, there’s something undeniably magical about the warm glow of candles that adds an extra layer of charm to your home during the holiday season.

Candles have long been hailed as the epitome of comfort, casting a soft radiance that transforms any space into a haven of warmth and relaxation.

Picture this: a Thanksgiving feast with loved ones, accompanied by the gentle flicker of candles illuminating the room. It’s the kind of atmosphere that turns a gathering into a cherished memory.

Keep in mind that, amidst the enchanting allure of candles, it’s crucial to shed light on a potential hidden enemy: volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. “Organic” candles might seem like the safer choice, but they might not be as safe and entirely exempt from VOCs.

VOCs are chemicals released into the air during combustion, and yes, that includes the lovely flicker of your favorite candle. While these compounds might not be an immediate cause for concern in small quantities, overexposure can lead to adverse health effects, especially in enclosed spaces.

So, how can you still bask in the cozy glow of candles without compromising your indoor air quality? Here are a few tips:

  • Opt for Soy or Beeswax Candles: These alternatives tend to produce fewer VOCs compared to traditional paraffin wax candles. Yet another reason why bees must be preserved.
  • Ventilate Your Space: Ensure proper airflow by cracking a window or using an exhaust fan to help disperse any potential VOC buildup.
  • Keep it Short and Sweet: Limit the duration of candle-burning sessions to minimize exposure.
  • Choose Fragrance-Free Options: Scented candles often contain additional chemicals that contribute to VOC emissions. If you can’t resist the aroma, consider using essential oil diffusers as a safer alternative.
  • Be Mindful of Candle Placement: Avoid clustering too many candles in one area to prevent an excessive release of VOCs.

As we revel in the joy of Thanksgiving and look forward to the winter holidays, let’s embrace the warmth and ambiance that candles bring to our homes.

Keep a balance between coziness and awareness, ensuring that the glow of your candles enhances the holiday spirit without compromising your well-being.

Wishing each and every one of you a Happy Thanksgiving and a joyful holiday season filled with moments of warmth, love, and delightful candlelit memories with your close ones.

Stay cozy, and stay safe! 🕯️🍂✨

Dear Friend: A Note to All for Thanksgiving

To my fellow USG community,

As we step into the season of gratitude and reflection, I want to extend a heartfelt acknowledgment of the challenges and chaos that the world has presented us with. In the whirlwind of our college lives, the Thanksgiving season holds a unique significance—a time to pause and find inspiration in the midst of everything.

This year, the world’s uncertainties may be casting a shadow, making it a bit harder to fully embrace the joy of Thanksgiving. But within the craziness, let’s find moments to cherish and be grateful for the strength, resilience, and collective spirit that binds us together as a college family.

In the heart of academia, where deadlines and exams often take center stage, the Thanksgiving break offers a chance to step back, breathe, and reconnect with the simple joys that surround us. It’s an opportunity to appreciate the diverse tapestry of experiences and knowledge that each member of our college community brings to the table.

In this season of giving thanks, let’s not only acknowledge the challenges but also celebrate the victories, no matter how small. Together, we’ve navigated through uncertainties, adapted to changes, and supported each other in ways that make our college community special.

Amid lectures, assignments, and the fast-paced college rhythm, take a moment to reflect on the friendships, the lessons learned, and the personal growth experienced. Embrace the present, savor the richness of your college journey, and find gratitude in the bonds that tie us together.

As we embark on this Thanksgiving season, let love, inspiration, and the unique spirit of our college community light our path forward.

Wishing you all a Thanksgiving filled with warmth, connection, and the knowledge that, together, we can navigate through any challenge that comes our way.

With gratitude,

Destiney

How to Feel Better…

Embracing comfort in November darkness!
Welcome to the cozy corner of our blog where we explore simple and comforting ways to uplift our spirits as the days grow shorter and colder. November can be a challenging month with early darkness and the anticipation of the Thanksgiving break. In this guide, we’ll explore practical and friendly tips to help you feel better in various situations.

resource: Google
  • Tired? Take a Nap!
The early dark evenings can leave us feeling fatigued. Instead of reaching for that extra cup of coffee, consider the rejuvenating power of a short nap. Find a quiet, comfortable spot, set an alarm, and indulge in a brief escape to recharge your energy.
  • Feeling Sad? Exercise Your Way to Happiness
November blues hitting hard? Lace-up your sneakers and get moving. Exercise releases endorphins, the body’s natural mood lifters. Whether it’s a brisk walk, a jog, or even a dance session in your room, physical activity can be a powerful antidote to sadness.
  • Anxious? Meditate Your Worried Away
As the days get colder, anxiety can creep in. Take a moment to pause and mediate. Find a quiet space, focus on your breath, and let go of the worries that weigh you down. A few minutes of mindfulness can work wonders in calming a restless mind.

  • Angry? Let the Music Soothe Your Soul
Feeling the heat of anger? Hit play on our favorite tunes. Music has a remarkable ability to influence our emotions. Create a playlist of songs that resonate with you and let melodies guide you toward a calmer state of mind.
  • Overwhelmed with Thoughts? Write It Out
The swirl of thoughts can be overwhelming. Grab a pen and paper or open a digital note app. Jot down your thoughts, fears, and inspirations. Writing can provide clarity, helping you process your feelings and gain perspective on the things that occupy your mind.
  • Feeling Saturated? Dive into a Good Book
When the world feels like too much, escape into the pages of a good book. Whether it’s fiction or non-fiction, reading offers a delightful refuge. Find a cozy blanket, make yourself a warm drink, and immerse yourself in a world of words to find solace.
  • Stressed? Take a Stroll
Stress is a common companion in our busy lives. Step outside for a calming walk. The brisk air and change of scenery can do wonders for your mood. Use this time to unplug, breathe deeply, and appreciate the simple joys around you.

As we navigate the November darkness, let’s embrace these friendly and emphatic strategies to feel better. Remember, self-care is a journey, not a destination. So, take a moment for yourself, find comfort in these activities, and let the coziness of the reason envelop you. Wishing you warmth and well-being as we move through this November together.

Are you traveling, cooking, spending the day in or out, seeing friends or family, or even catching up with schoolwork? Don’t fear; I have some ideas to help you plan or destress this break.

Go for a walk or hike: Step into nature’s embrace this Thanksgiving with a rejuvenating hike or leisurely stroll. Whether you choose a scenic route or a quiet neighborhood path, the simple act of moving your body in nature can be a refreshing break from the holiday hustle. So, lace up your shoes, breathe in the crisp fall air, and savor the moments of serenity that a hike or walk can bring.

Plan a road trip: Plan a stress-free escape by selecting a nearby destination with scenic routes and charming stops. Whether it’s a nearby city or a different state, let the journey be the destination and see the joy of the open road this holiday season.

Hanging with family: Whether it’s sharing recipes with relatives, bantering with siblings/cousins, or simply enjoying the warmth of familial bonds, make this break a time to savor the true essence of togetherness. So, this holiday season, let’s embrace the joy of being surrounded by loved ones and express gratitude for the simple yet profound gift of family.

Hanging with friends: From laughter-filled game nights to heartwarming conversations by the fireplace. This break is a chance to appreciate the warmth of friendship and express gratitude for those bonds. So, share stories over a slice of pie or take a spontaneous adventure, cherishing the moments spent hanging with friends.

Pick up a new hobby: Whether trying your hand at painting, delving into the world of photography, or mastering the art of cooking, a break from routine provides the perfect opportunity to explore untapped passions.

Watch a movie/TV show: Stay in and watch some Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, or Tubi and get caught up with TV shows or watch the latest movies. I heard Five Nights of Freddys came out in theaters, and on Tuesdays in most theaters, there are discounts for students, FYI.

Catch up with schoolwork: With almost a month left this semester, take this break to catch up with schoolwork. Send those emails, ask questions, work on assignments, and read the syllabus. Let’s end this semester strong!

Let’s Talk Turkey!

Source: Google Images https://images.app.goo.gl/8ntQ3QhKmMTdu2mu6

With Thanksgiving being just around the corner, here are some of the best deals around this year for your holiday feast. In round one we have the pièce de résistance of the meal, the turkey. Let’s start off with Giant Food. They price their frozen turkeys at $0.37 a pound (not bad!). However, then there are Harris Teeter and Wegmans. Both of these stores have their frozen turkey’s priced at…….. $0.29 a pound (that’s an even better deal!). I am hosting Thanksgiving this year for eight people, so I went with the Harris Teeter deal* and got a turkey for $5 that was just a little over 18lbs! (*Please note that you must spend a minimum of $40 to get your turkey for the $0.29 a pound pricing.)

Now let’s say you’re hosting this year but want to take the stress out of doing the whole cooking part; well, I have an answer for you too! Why not order ahead of time, and essentially have it catered right to you; easy as that! A classic meal for 8-10 people, from Harris Teeter will run you about $60. Your meal will include a turkey, cornbread stuffing, cranberry relish, gravy, scalloped potatoes, and green bean casserole. But our next contender who serves 4-6 people offers a lot more options in my opinion. Priced at right around $100 your feast will include, turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce, gravy, rolls, and you get a choice of pie as well. I think if your budget is around $100, I would for sure go to your local Giant Food store. Simply because they offer a bigger variety and food, and if you have mostly small kids, this meal could probably feed more people as well.

What are some of your Thanksgiving traditions and what is your favorite side dish? Personally, I love stuffing! Every family makes it differently and puts their own spin on it, and I think that’s so awesome! I wish everyone a safe, happy, and fun Thanksgiving!
