The Best Bites Near USG

As students, finding the perfect spots to grab a quick bite or unwind with friends is a crucial part of the college experience. After all, we all deserve a little treat here and there to reward ourselves for the hard work we put into studying and doing well in our classes! Luckily for us USG students, we have many great places to eat near campus. Here are some spots my friends and I go to whenever we’re looking to get some food or drinks near campus.

Black Lion Coffee and Cafe: This spot is a 5 minute walk from campus. They serve the best freshly roasted Ethiopian coffee. I also love their chai latte! Apart from drinks, they also sell sandwiches and paninis. This neat little spot has a great ambiance, perfect for relaxing and recharging. It’s also a great study spot.

Potomac Pizza: Craving a slice of comfort? Potomac Pizza is a local classic that has quickly become my go-to for delicious pizzas that never disappoint. This is a great option if you and your friends are looking to share a pizza! My friends and I are big fans of the margherita pizza and the spinach ricotta pizza.

Bethesda Bagels: This is another local classic. It’s a family owned and operated business that serves the best hand-rolled New York style bagels. For those early mornings on campus, this is a nice spot to grab some quick breakfast.

Hangry Joe’s Hot Chicken: When the craving for something spicy hits, Hangry Joe’s Hot Chicken is the answer. From mild to extra hot, each bite of their chicken is a flavorful adventure. The laid-back atmosphere and friendly staff makes this place a must-visit! I was also surprised to learn that they sell delicious bubble tea.

Krispy Kreme: This list would not be complete without including Krispy Kreme doughnuts! This is about a 3 minute drive from campus and is the only Krispy Kreme location in all of Montgomery County. Whether I’m celebrating a small victory or simply treating myself to a midweek pick-me-up, the warm, fresh doughnuts never fail to be a bad option!

Do’s and Don’ts of Winter Break

Source: icegif

Do #1

Take the much needed time to relax and unwind after the long semester. Catch up on your sleep, watch some of your favorite shows, and neglect the feeling of “Oh I forgot to turn in that assignment!” You deserve this break.

Do #2

Embrace the holiday season by spending time with your friends and family. Make sure that you are having fun and enjoying the festivities. Plan lots of enjoyable activities, share how your semester went, and savor delicious food.

Do #3

Try to stay active! It’s important to prioritize both your mental and physical health over this break. Sign up for your local gym, go on runs with your favorite music playlist, or even search YouTube for some in-home exercises and Pilates!

Do #4

Register for your spring classes. Just in case you forgot—here is your quick reminder. Make sure you are signed up for the right classes and create a schedule ahead of time so that next semester can be enjoyable for you.

Don’t #1

Use the break to overwhelm yourself with studying, working, or planning. You might have a winter class—or even some other work that needs your attention. But it’s important that you allow yourself some time to relax.

Don’t #2

Isolate yourself and forget to hang out/stay in contact with your friends and family. Balance both your social life and your non-social life by being kind to yourself and your needs.

Don’t #3

Overschedule the activities you plan to do during break. I know personally that I have been meaning to do so much within the next few weeks, but it’s okay to realize that I won’t be able to get to everything, and so should you. Don’t give yourself a burnout by all the plans that you make.

Don’t #4

Be on your electronic devices the whole break. Give your eyes time to relax and look away for 20 seconds and blink a few times (I think? I saw it on an ad somewhere). Make sure that you are not excessively using your screen time. A good way to do that is to set some settings on your phone.

Enjoy Your Winter Break with These Fun Activities

Winter break is finally here! It is that magical time of the year when you get to take a break from college and enjoy some well-deserved time off. Whether you are looking to stay cozy indoors or venture out into the snowy wonderland, there are plenty of activities to make your winter break memorable.

When the weather outside is frightful, indoor games and activities can be delightful! Gather your family or friends for game nights filled with classics like board games, card games, or puzzles. It is a fantastic way to bond and have fun together while staying warm and toasty indoors.

Winter break is an excellent time to dive into the magical worlds of books. Grab a cup of hot cocoa, snuggle up with a blanket, and lose yourself in captivating stories. Whether you prefer adventure, mystery, fantasy, or non-fiction, there is a book waiting for you.

Unleash your creativity during the winter break! Try your hand at drawing, painting, writing stories or poems, or even composing music. Let your imagination run wild and express yourself through various artistic mediums. You might discover hidden talents or simply enjoy the process of creating something unique.

While it is essential to relax and have fun during the break, it is also a good time to think about the future. Set some goals for the upcoming year, whether they are related to academics, personal growth, hobbies, or new experiences. Reflect on what you have achieved so far and make plans for how you want to continue growing and learning.

Remember, winter break is a precious time to recharge, explore new activities, and spend quality time with loved ones. Whether you choose to stay indoors or venture outside, make the most of this wonderful time and create lasting memories that will warm your heart throughout the season.

Taking Life’s Detour… Again

When I last shared on this blog about “Taking Life’s Detour,” my future was a little more uncertain. Now, here’s a follow-up, a Part 2, to shed light on where life is guiding me. Also, please take my continuous changes and uncertainty to understand that everyone’s life path is unique to themselves! It is rare for one to have everything planned perfectly immediately after graduating.

Anyway, in just five days, college will be behind me. With a job starting in June, I had to rethink my travel plans originally designed for a potential September start. So, right after my last final, I’m starting my journey in Arizona and Utah, and am eager to explore the stunning hikes and canyons there.

Following my time out west, I’ll be back home for a short break before heading to Costa Rica in January. I can hardly contain my excitement about spending three weeks in a surf camp, surrounded by people my age who share similar interests. It’s a chance for personal growth, exploration, and making lasting connections.

After a brief return home, it’s off to Hawaii for six weeks. I’ll be helping out at a hostel that was established in Maui and is expanding to the Big Island, all while soaking in the local culture and nightlife. The grand opening on February 1st aligns perfectly with my visit, and the idea of exploring the islands has me beyond excited.

Yet, amidst these plans, there are still uncertainties. Around spring break, I plan to return to Maryland to join my friends in their last semester at UMD, and going on our final spring break together. As April and May unfold, I’ll dive into a new opportunity: working at a startup as a front-end web developer and/or all around data person. The small company setting promises a broader learning experience, allowing me to explore beyond a specific role.

Gratitude and excitement fill me as I think about the unique journey ahead. I’m not just looking forward to the adventures in different parts of the world but also to starting my career as a data engineer. Life’s detour has led me down an unexpected and exhilarating path, and I couldn’t be more grateful.

Savoring Winter Warmth

As December unfolds and the chill in the air becomes more pronounced, there’s nothing quite like a steaming bowl of comfort to warm both body and soul. Among the array of options, one dish stands out as the perfect remedy for a cold December day: Tonkotsu Ramen with a Miso Base. This Japanese culinary masterpiece combines rich, hearty flavors with the warmth that only a bowl of ramen can provide.

Tonkotsu Ramen

At its core, Tonkotsu Ramen is a pork bone broth-based noodle soup, known for its velvety texture and depth of taste. Paired with a Miso base, the dish reaches new heights of savory complexity, creating a symphony of flavors that dance on your palate.

https://www.foodandwine.com/tonkotsu-ramen-7094539

The journey to crafting the perfect bowl of Tonkotsu Ramen begins with the broth. Traditionally, this involves simmering pork bones for hours until they release their collagen, resulting in a broth that’s both creamy and flavorful. The addition of Miso paste elevates the broth, infusing it with a robust umami essence that lingers on the taste buds.

The choice of noodles is crucial in achieving the ideal ramen experience. I tend to opt for thick, chewy noodles that can stand up to the richness of the broth. These noodles act as the perfect canvas, soaking up the flavors of the broth while providing a satisfying texture with each slurp.

The toppings for your Tonkotsu Ramen can be as diverse as your preferences, but there are some classics that shouldn’t be overlooked. Slices of succulent Chashu pork, crispy seaweed, and a perfectly soft-boiled egg with a runny yolk are staples that add both depth and variety to each spoonful.

Now, let’s talk about the Miso base. Miso, a traditional Japanese seasoning produced by fermenting soybeans, rice, or barley, introduces a unique and delightful complexity to the Tonkotsu broth. The salty and slightly sweet profile of Miso enhances the umami notes, creating a harmonious blend that warms you from the inside out.

The first taste is an explosion of flavors! Savoring a bowl of Tonkotsu Ramen with a Miso base on a cold December day is more than just a meal; it’s a sensory experience that brings me comfort and joy. As you cozy up with your bowl, put on a nice movie and enjoy your meal!  I hope this inspires you to make a bowl of ramen, or enjoy one at a nice restaurant like MAKI on Rockville Pike!

Snow in the 2000’s ❄️

I was born in the 2000’s and whenever it gets chilly outside, I instantly feel nostalgic about all the snowy traditions I had when I was younger. So today I want to go down memory lane and remind any 2000 babies about the fun times!

This generation unfortunately doesn’t have the luxury of getting off on snow days anymore, and the weather has changed quite a bit from when I was younger. However, the 2000’s were filled with unique experiences, like huge snow storms that prevented us from getting outside and getting up early in the morning to watch the news to see if our schools were on the list at the bottom of the screen for closures.

Some of my favorite memories on a snow day include:

  1. Watching cozy movies 🎥

When it’s chilly outside, one of my favorite things to do is cozy up and watch a movie, but especially a movie that makes me feel warm. For me, it is usually one of the classics, like Charlie Brown or The Polar Express. Also, old time movies bring me a lot of joy and I love watching them when it is cold outside.

  1. Building a snowman ☃️

Another core memory I have is building a snowman or making snow angels with my sister on a snow day. I remember my mom would give us all of the pieces we needed, like the button eyes, the carrot for the nose, and the sticks for the arms and we would try to roll up as much snow as possible to make the biggest snowman on the block!

  1. Sledding

Some of my best memories were sledding with my sister when I had off on school for snow. There was this one really big hill by our house, and we would always take our long and spinning sleds and go down the hill like a hundred times, and run back up to the top and do it over and over again until it was finally time to leave.

  1. Drinking hot chocolate 🍫

Hot chocolate is a delicious warm drink that works so well for the cold season. Another memory I have from when I was younger was my aunt making it from scratch with Hershey chocolate bars, and it was delicious!

  1. Winter break excitement! 😊

Of course, the best part about a snow day was that it meant winter break was coming soon, and we would have off from school, and the holidays were right around the corner!

I hope my final blog of the semester brought a little relaxation or ideas for break. I hope everyone had a great semester and has a very relaxing winter break, because you deserve it!

Winter Is Coming (Sleep? Yes please)

Greetings friends,

As the snow sneaks its way in Maryland and exams come to end, particularly students ask themselves – is the time for my winter slumber finally approaching?

Above: Stock Photo from Pexels.com

And hold to that thought, because your winter vacation sleep is more important than you may think.

Getting enough sleep during the semester proves challenging, and the winter vacation is an excellent opportunity to catch up, build healthy habits, and fix your biological clock.

Bears, the ultimate winter enthusiasts, just got it rights. They’re not hitting snooze on an alarm clock but dialing down their metabolic rate for a grand winter nap. It’s their way of saying, “Why face the cold when you can catch some Zs and emerge looking fabulous in spring?”

So, there is always something to learn from nature and bears, the OG hibernation gurus, show us that a little winter rest goes a long way!

That being said – good cognitive performance and mental health during next semester is highly dependent on the quality of your sleep.

Here is a bit of how the brain works:

Your brain consists of neurons that transmit ‘electricity’ to function. I use ‘electricity’ loosely, but in this case, the distinction matters. Neurons send these electrical signals by moving charged atoms across their membrane, either from inside to outside or vice versa. It takes time for them to establish a balance of these atoms, enabling rapid response upon triggering.

Repetitive firing can unbalance these atoms faster than they can rebalance, reaching a point where the neuron can’t fire. This phenomenon is akin to semantic satiation, where repeating a word rapidly renders it temporarily meaningless.

The neurons responsible for assigning meaning become unbalanced and temporarily inactive, resulting in a loss of function. While there are ways your body can enhance neuron firing, every neuron ultimately requires rest.

Additionally, sleep serves as a mechanism to remove a significant amount of toxins naturally produced by your brain. During wakefulness, toxins accumulate, and sleep acts as a critical process to clear them, fostering a refreshed mental state. The combination of unbalanced neurons and toxin buildup manifests as a heavy, sluggish feeling, serving as a signal to encourage rest and repair.

I like making the parallel of a computer and the brain. The more you use it without putting it to sleep mode the more it will overheat because of backup processes, and hence your system slows down.

Make sure to remember how currently you are looking forward to your winter sleep, and start spring semester strong.

It was lovely to blog for USG this semester and hopefully some of the things I wrote you found engaging. Hopefully, you will hear from me again next semester. If not, I will be around at USG to chat!

Happy Holidays, and stay cozy!
