You Are Who You Are

Hello Everyone! I hope everyone is having a great start to the 2024 Spring semester!

My start of the semester has had an intriguing start. In one of my classes, we were asked to take a personality test, and I wanted to share with you the different personality types and traits that make up a person, and their habits. I ended up having one of the rarest personality types, and found the whole topic interesting. Many of you have probably taken a test like this once in your life. However, if you are unaware, the Myers-Briggs type indicator is a self report questionnaire testing psychological preferences in how people perceive the world and make decisions. If you want to know your MBTI, click the link below, and let’s get into it!

https://www.16personalities.com/free-personality-test

To find out your personality type, it goes by four different acronyms and here’s what each of them stands for:

E or I for Extraversion or Introversion (where you focus your attention)

S or N for Sensing or Intuition (the way you take in information)

T or F for Thinking or Feeling (how you make decisions)

J or P for Judging or Perceiving (how you deal with the world)

For reference, here is what each letter indicates about your personality

E: This person typically gets energized from larger social settings and can be described as outgoing and talkative.

I: This person typically enjoys smaller social settings and values connection in all aspects of life. This person can be described as reserved and private.

S: Sensing indicates the person uses a factual way of thinking commonly described as thinking with your head.

N: Intuition can be described as thinking with your heart. People who lead with this typically see the bigger picture and make connections figuratively.

T:  Can be described as being level-headed, because this person usually values fairness and doesn’t mind debating in an argument with logical reasoning.

F: This person is usually empathetic and makes decisions based upon personal morals, while leading with harmony and forgiveness.

J: This person is very detail-oriented and values deadlines and organization. When making plans, they want to know what they are getting into.

P: This person is more spontaneous and leaves their options open, seeing rules and deadlines as flexible.

The most common personality type is ISFJ, which is introversion, sensing, feeling, and judging. The rarest is INFJ, which is introversion, intuition, feeling, and judging. I thought it was pretty cool to know why I act the way I do sometimes, and know that understanding your type can greatly help you in group assignments, team projects at work, and allow you to understand other people and their intentions!

Stay the Course: Super Bowl Edition

Photo by Gerd Altmann on Pexels.com

Embarking on the journey through higher education is akin to preparing for the Super Bowl in the world of academics. The college experience offers a unique blend of academic exploration, personal growth, and social interaction, much like the rigorous training, strategic planning, and teamwork required in football’s biggest event. However, just as football players face formidable opponents on the field, college students encounter their own set of challenges that can test their resilience and determination. From the pressure to excel academically to the struggle to fit in socially and the burden of financial strain, students must navigate obstacles much like players maneuver through a tough defense. Moreover, mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and stress are prevalent among college students, akin to the physical toll and psychological stress experienced by athletes during intense competition.

In the face of academic pressure, social expectations, financial strain, and mental health issues, college students must adopt a winning mindset similar to that of Super Bowl contenders. Like football players preparing for the big game, students must cultivate resilience and determination to overcome obstacles and achieve success. By staying focused on their goals, managing their time effectively, and seeking support from peers, professors, and mental health professionals, students can navigate the complexities of college life with the precision and determination of a championship-winning team. Moreover, by prioritizing self-care, setting realistic goals, and fostering a supportive network of friends and mentors, students can create a winning environment that promotes their well-being and academic success. As they navigate the challenges of college life, students must remember that resilience, determination, and self-care are essential ingredients for achieving victory in their academic pursuits, much like the resilience, determination, and teamwork displayed by Super Bowl champions.

Earning a spot in the playoffs is no small feat! Yet, the payoff is undeniably gratifying. As college students, it’s essential to maintain consistent effort and dedication to reap the rewards of our hard work. Remember, the USG offers a lot of resources to help you succeed.

Behind the Facade: Reflecting on Imposter Syndrome

Hi everyone! These are my thoughts as I’ve been juggling with imposter syndrome and I hope reading about it helps you deal with it too. It’s something that we all might’ve experienced at one point or another. Lately, as someone who has been feeling this phenomenon, I would like to stress that you’re not alone in this.

Source: giphy

First, let’s get down to the basics. What’s an imposter syndrome?  Imposter syndrome is doubting yourself and your abilities to be successful despite evidence of your skills and academic accomplishments. A person who feels this way often compares themselves to their peers and recognizes that their abilities will never be up to par with others. This is especially true for college students who are frequently thrown into high-demand situations, overwhelmed with academic decisions, and unsure about what their future holds.

Like I mentioned earlier, I’ve been feeling this way for a few weeks now. Last summer, I felt confident in myself because I got into the BS/MPH program so I thought that I was actually worth something. After doubting myself for so long, that achievement felt good. But during that time, I also got rejected from the few internships I applied for. I was overconfident in my abilities and now I feel anxious about applying for jobs or internships because I constantly fear rejections. Watching as my peers all secure summer internships left me with this sense of failure. Despite applying for a couple of internships over the past month, I felt incompetent and lacking in my attributions, constantly comparing myself to others.

Many times I’ve wondered if I set unrealistic expectations for myself beyond my reach or if I was too afraid to attain them? Before applying for anything, I would pause and ask myself, “Do I really have a chance? Imagine the amount of people applying who have a better cover letter, a better resume, a better story to tell.” And I would slowly feel myself exiting from the screen. This cycle of anxiety and doubt has kept a hold on me, but I’ve tried to read and watch videos on imposter syndrome to some result.

The best way to deal with it? Understand yourself and try to refute the negative thoughts. For every belief that you are not capable, find something that counterattacks it. “I don’t have the necessary skills for this job,” I think. But then suddenly I realize, “What if I do? What if I’m exactly the type of person they’re looking for? I will never know until I try.” Second thing I’ve learned is to talk to someone about it. Others see your value more than you, and hearing people close to you vocalize their support and belief in you can give you the confidence you need.

Getting Started On The Right Foot

Hello everyone! Welcome back to the spring semester, and a special shout-out to those of us entering the final lap of our undergraduate journey. As someone who has navigated through many semesters, I have learned many ways to get myself started on the right foot. Here are a couple of ways I get myself on track for a busy, exciting semester.

  1. Getting everything into Google Calendar: Last year, I began to use Google Calendar to keep myself on track and stay on top of my commitments. I made the switch from a traditional planner to Google Calendar, and it’s been a game-changer. The ability to put in my class schedule and sync assignment deadlines directly from Canvas has made me much more organized, and it has helped me so much with my time management.
  2. Attending events: A big part of being a student is getting involved with student life activities. Take the time to join a club or start one! Today, February 6, there will be a winter welcome and student involvement fair. Take the time to head to the first floor of BSE from 11am to 1pm to see student organizations on campus, the campus resource fair, and get free treats! Get involved, make connections, and make the most of your college experience.
  3. Set realistic goals: Many of us may have large projects to work on this semester. I know that for me personally, I have a capstone project due at the end of the semester. It’s a large project, so I have set mini goals to get a little bit of my paper done each week so that I’m not rushing to finish it at the last minute later on. Breaking down large tasks into smaller, manageable steps keeps the momentum going and helps prevent me from burnout.
  4. Setting time apart for my own personal hobbies: Taking care of our mental and physical well-being is non-negotiable, especially during the busy semester ahead. It’s easy to get caught up in all of the assignments that must be done, but prioritizing self-care is key. Whether it’s going to the gym, painting, or picking up a good book, find what winds you down and make it a non-negotiable part of your routine this semester.

In conclusion, welcome back to what promises to be an exciting and fulfilling semester. Let’s harness the power of organization, participation, realistic goals, and self-care to make this final chapter of the undergraduate adventure memorable. Here’s to a successful and rewarding spring semester!

A Guide to a Great Semester

Embarking on a new semester can be both exciting and overwhelming. However, with a few key strategies, you can turn it into a rewarding and successful experience. Here are some essential tips to help you make the most of your academic journey this semester:

Time Management: Time management is the cornerstone of a successful semester. Creating a realistic schedule that includes your classes, study sessions, and other commitments can be a great help. In addition, prioritizing tasks based on deadlines and importance will help you be more focused. Breaking down larger tasks into smaller, manageable steps can make them less daunting. Lastly, remember to allocate some time for self-care in your schedule.

Active Participation in Class: Engaging actively in class is a game-changer. Attending every lecture and participating in discussions contributes to a better understanding of the concepts. Taking notes not only helps in understanding the material but also serves as a valuable resource during exams. Active participation not only enhances your understanding but also makes the learning experience more enjoyable.

Seek Help When Needed: Do not hesitate to seek help if you are struggling with any concepts. Professors, teaching assistants, and classmates are valuable resources. If you are failing to understand a particular subject, consider forming study groups to share insights and tackle difficult concepts collaboratively. Take advantage of office hours to clarify doubts and seek guidance. You should understand that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

A great semester is within your reach by incorporating effective time management, active class participation, and seeking help when needed. Remember, it is not just about surviving the semester, it is about thriving and enjoying the learning process. By implementing these tips, you will set yourself on a path to academic success and personal growth. Good luck with the Spring 2024 semester!

New Year? New you!

Source: Google images https://www.bing.com/images/search

Welcome to 2024 everyone! I hope your winter break is taking off fabulously, and you’re enjoying the time off from school. With it being a new year now, has anyone set any goals for 2024? I know a lot of people do “Dry January” or focus more on living a healthier lifestyle. Regardless of what you chose, here are some ways I thought would be fun to kick off the new year!

  1. UNWIND AT THE SPA - Why now relax and start the year off with a wonderful massage or facial? Hand and Stone have locations in Gaithersburg (the Kentlands to be exact), and Olney. Right now, for first time visitors they are offering introductory pricing on a 1hour massage, or 1 hour facial, your choice for $79.95! I had my facial done at the Olney location and it was so relaxing, I practically fell asleep! My husband did the 1-hour massage, and if you need someone to really work the kinks out of your back, ask for Kenneth he said, because his back has never felt better! Here’s a link to their site to book: https://handandstone.com/spa-deals\

2. CHANGE UP YOUR HAIR – Have you ever wanted a drastic change for your hair needs, or wanted to try something new? Well Floyd’s 99 has got you covered! They are a full-service salon, as well as a barbershop, thus they cater to everyone. I personally get my hair colored and styled by Lillian at the Gaithersburg location; she does great work. However, if you need a good fade, or a straight razor shave, go see my girl Thuy there as well. She’ll made you look so sharp! They also have a location on Rockville Pike as well, Dru is a great barber who works at that shop too! You can view pricing information and everyone’s schedule on their website: https://www.floydsbarbershop.com/gaithersburg/

3. JOIN A GYM – If you were thinking of joining a gym, now is the time to do so. A lot of gyms in our area offer specials in January to help jumpstart your fitness goals. Right now, it seems as if Onelife Fitness is offering a discount on their fee to sign up from $199 down to $79! They have multiple locations in our area so why not check them out here: https://join.onelifefitness.com/

4. VISIT A BREWERY – We have so many breweries in our area, to be honest it’s hard to pick just one to talk about. Also, to be quite frank, I’m more of a cider girly myself. But after a few visits and some research, I came across a cidery and a brewery all in one! Two Story Chimney Ciderworks has great cider! I personally love the Bee Sting a honey cider, and I always like to try their seasonal flavors too. But wait there’s more! They also share their space with Silly Yak Beer aka they sell Gluten Free beer they brew themselves. How cool is that for all my gluten intolerant people. I really like that they cater to people’s allergies here, and they always rotate different food trucks too. Did I mention they also have axe throwing? You can find them on the edge of Damascus and Gaithersburg off of Route 108. Here’s all the juicy info for you too: https://twostorychimney.com/https://sillyyakbeer.com/beer/

Whatever you choose, I wish everyone a safe and fun break! It has been fun writing for this blog this last semester. I can’t wait to start up again soon! But until then, take care everyone. Don’t forget to sign up for the classes too! Any thought on what we should review next? What are some blogs you want to read? Drop your suggestions below in the comments!

Bye for now 🙂

Graduation!

Source: iStock

I’m writing this blog post as an official 2023 graduate!!! It’s been three years of so much work and sacrifice, and the days leading up to graduation were pretty hectic.
I ended up doing a lot of things to make my graduation experience special. It was stressful at times, but I’m glad that I made time to do them despite a super busy schedule. Here’s what I spent the last few weeks doing to celebrate:

Buying A Custom Stole
This was something I wasn’t even planning on doing until a month before graduation. But I’d seen some videos of graduates with custom stoles and I thought it’d be nice to have one of my own. I didn’t really think I’d be able to learn how to make a stole on such short notice, so I ended up buying one on Etsy. There are so many vendors selling customized stoles on Etsy, so there were a lot of options. The vendor I worked with was very nice and willing to send me so many drafts of the stole ideas I had.

Taking Graduation Pictures
While taking pictures after the commencement ceremony is nice, I also wanted to take some pictures the weekend before. The actual day of the ceremony can be chaotic, so it was great to just get some pictures done in advance. Some people opt to get these pictures done with a professional photographer, but I ended up going to campus and having my sisters take pictures on my phone.

Making A Scrapbook
I’ve been working on a scrapbook of various memories and events that have happened over the last few years. I’m not done yet, but I’m excited to continue working on it. It’s going to be nice to have something to look back on and see the things that were important to me at this time.

Congratulations to my fellow 2023 graduates! And to future graduates, I hope you consider doing any of these things to celebrate.
