Spark The Reader In You-Part III 📚

Back to the basics with one of my favorite blogs to post! I feel like this has become a series of mine, and I haven’t posted a book recommendation blog since June. So gear up, because these books may be some of the best books you have read!

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes By: Suzanne Collins

I was always a fan of The Hunger Games series growing up, and just reread those books in January, but this prequel came out and it was amazing! The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is a dystopian action-adventure novel set 64 years before the events of the first novel, following Coriolanus Snow, who we know as the president of Panem and the 10th annual Hunger Games. The movie for this also came out around November, and it made the story even better. Highly recommend the book and adaptation. https://www.scatteredbooks.com/book-reviews/the-ballad-of-songbirds-and-snakes-by-suzanne-collins/

What Once Was Mine. By: Liz Braswell

What Once Was Mine is the first retelling fantasy I have read, and if you are a fan of Disney, you will greatly enjoy not just this one, but every princess retelling the author has published. In this retelling of Tangled, What Once Was Mine shows what could’ve happened if Queen Arianna drank from the wrong flower. When she accidentally drinks from the Moondrop flower instead of the Sundrop flower, Rapunzel is born with a headful of silver hair and the ability not to heal, but hurt. https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/56623541

The Improbable Meet-Cute Novellas

This was a series written by multiple authors and put out on Valentine’s Day. It is a collection of romance novellas. If you don’t know what a novella is, it is a short story or snapshot of a story line. All of these novellas are probably less than 100 pages and super easy, light, and fun to read.

The Leftover Woman By: Jean Kwok

The Leftover Woman is about a courageous woman fighting to escape and a mother’s love and sacrifice, and how culture and language dramatically change the lens through which we are seen and evaluated by others. I was not expecting to love this book as much as I did. It truly was a page turning journey to go through! https://www.jeankwok.com/the-leftover-woman

I hope you consider some of these recommendations, and happy reading!

The Art of Failure

Failure. It’s a word that often carries a negative connotation, invoking feelings of disappointment, shame, and frustration. However, what if we were to reframe our perspective on failure? What if, instead of viewing it as a roadblock, we saw it as a stepping stone to growth and success? Let’s explore the art of failure and how embracing setbacks can lead to profound personal and professional growth.

Failure is an inevitable part of life, especially in the academic and professional realms. Whether it’s receiving a low grade on a test, facing rejection from a job or internship, or experiencing setbacks in personal projects, we all encounter failure at some point. However, it’s essential to recognize that failure is not the end of the road but rather a natural and necessary part of the journey.

One of the most valuable lessons we can learn from failure is resilience. When faced with setbacks, we have a choice: we can either let failure defeat us or use it as an opportunity to learn, grow, and persevere. Every failure presents a chance to reflect on our actions, identify areas for improvement, and develop new strategies for success.

Some of the most iconic figures in history have shown us that failure is not the end of the journey but rather a crucial stepping stone towards achieving greatness. For example, Beyoncé faced controversy after lip-syncing at President Obama’s inauguration, and used the setback as motivation to deliver a show-stopping performance at the Super Bowl halftime show, showcasing her resilience and unwavering dedication to her craft while reclaiming her reputation as one of the greatest performers of her generation.

The art of failure lies in our ability to embrace setbacks as opportunities for growth. By learning from our failures, cultivating a growth mindset, and persevering in the face of adversity, we can turn setbacks into stepping stones toward success. So the next time you encounter failure, remember that it’s not the end of the road but rather a chance to learn, grow, and ultimately thrive. Embrace failure, for it is through adversity that we truly discover our strength and potential.

What I Would Tell My Younger Self

Source: pexels

If I could go back and talk to my younger self, I would tell her several things. First and foremost, I would tell myself that the mistakes I make are not so terrible. I would reassure her that mistakes are a part of our lives and doing them does not mean that it is the end of the world. The best thing about making mistakes? You can learn from them and grow, so I would tell her to move past them and focus on something that is important.

The second thing I would tell my younger self is to stop wishing to get older because being an adult is not as fun as it seems. I would advise myself to have fun and enjoy life’s simple pleasures. I would tell her to appreciate the environment around her and to go on walks, to the playground, and do things reckless children do when they have the simple freedom. I would tell her that when you are an adult, the world seems much harsher. There will be a lot of responsibilities on your shoulders and sometimes it will seem a little too much, so enjoy and appreciate the life you have now.

The third thing I would tell my younger self is to prioritize my mental health and well-being. Growing up, I was pretty careless about what I ate and all the junk food I consumed. I wish I could tell myself that eating healthier, getting adequate sleep, and having a balanced lifestyle would go a long-way towards caring about my own body. I would tell her to prioritize self-care, to do things that she loves and nurture her mind and body through various little activities. I would prevent myself from having stress and share some valuable tips with her on how to relax and clear her thoughts.

Last but not least, I would tell myself to not procrastinate. Sometimes procrastination does its thing and you can get away with it, but practicing timely commitment can go a long way into ensuring a successful future. I would encourage my younger self to cultivate a mindset that continues to learn and acknowledge her errors, but also strives to do better and improve. This will be an asset for life. (But at the bare minimum, keep procrastination to once per month please).

Spring Is Almost Here!

Hello everyone, and happy (almost) spring! Although it is not technically spring until March 19th, the weather from these last few days sure does make it feel like it is! Spring is my favorite season. With the flowers blooming, the sun setting later in the day, and the weather warming up, there is nothing that makes me happier than this change of season. With this new season also comes many events I’m looking forward to! Today, I wanted to share with you what I’m looking forward to in my personal life this spring.

Spring break: With us almost being at the halfway point of the semester, I can definitely say I’m looking forward to the upcoming spring break. This year, I plan to go to New York for a day, see the cherry blossoms in D.C., spend some time hanging out with my friends, and relax! I went to New York for the first time during last year’s spring break, so I hope to go again this year. (Image source: Wikipedia)

Concerts: I have an upcoming concert in April. I’m going to see Bad Bunny when he comes to play a show in D.C.! This will be my third time seeing him in concert, and I’m really excited to see him again with my best friends. He is one of my all time favorite artists, so to say I’m looking forward to seeing his show once again is an understatement. (Image source: The Hill)

Graduation: Graduating college has been my biggest goal. This May, I will finally achieve my goal of receiving my bachelor’s degree and will walk the stage. I have been working towards this achievement for so long, so I’m super excited to graduate! (Image source: University of Maryland)

My trip to Europe: Shortly after graduation, I will be heading overseas to visit the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, and France. I have never traveled overseas before. It has been a dream of mine for so long! This trip is extra special because I will be getting to explore to these beautiful countries with my parents and my brother. (Image source: Getty Images)

I love AYCE at Kpot!

I recently went to Kpot in Germantown, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint! They have two different options to choose from, all you can eat Korean BBQ, or AYCE hot pot. On this occasion my husband and I wanted to try the Korean BBQ option; we went on a Sunday evening during dinner time. The atmosphere and ambiance were really nice, and they have tons of seating available inside. You can choose from a number of items to order off of the provided I-Pad they give you. Anything from chicken, beef, seafood, and pork; they even offer veggies, and pineapple too. After we placed our order, it was off to the sauce bar where we could customize our dipping sauces for the meats. They even had a few hot items too, such as spring rolls, sesame balls, and fresh fruit options as well.

Once we got back to our table, the food started to arrive for us to grill tableside. We started off with some of the dinner only options, such as the steaks, and garlic shrimp. The beef bulgogi was really tasty, and I liked the spicy salmon as well. I’d have to say we definitely tried a couple from each category for sure! After quite a few rounds and finally feeling stuffed, it was time to call it quits. All in all, I would have to say this was a really good experience we had a Kpot, and I know we will be back soon to try the hot pot. So, this is a to be continued soon post……..

If you’re interested in trying Kpot and seeing all that they have to offer you can find more information in the link below. Also, they have another location in Rockville as well off of Randolph Road. I have been to that location as well and it was also another good experience. The pricing on Sunday is the same all day (same with Saturday), which is the dinner price of $30.99, and you get your choice of either the hot pot menu or the Korean BBQ menu. BUT…… If you pay and addition $5.00 more, you can do BOTH menu options. I recommend going pretty hungry for this because it’s a lot of food. They also offer a $19.99 option for lunch Monday- Friday from 12-4 pm. As I said earlier this is to be continued, so next time we will talk about the hot pot experience which I cannot wait for!

Fixed Mindset vs. Growth Mindset: What’s the Difference?

Source: Google

Are you someone who believes that your abilities and intelligence are fixed traits, or do you think you can develop and improve them over time? This question lies at the heart of the concept of fixed mindset versus growth mindset.

Fixed Mindset: People with a fixed mindset tend to believe that their talents and abilities are set in stone. They may think, “I am just not good at math” or “I will never be able to learn a new language.” When faced with challenges, they may avoid them out of fear of failure, believing that failure reflects their inherent limitations.

Growth Mindset: Individuals with a growth mindset see their abilities as malleable. They believe that with effort, perseverance, and learning from mistakes, they can improve and grow. Challenges are viewed as opportunities to learn and develop, rather than threats to their self-worth.

So, why does it matter?

Having a growth mindset can lead to greater success and fulfillment in life. When you believe that you can improve through your efforts, you are more likely to take on challenges, persist in the face of setbacks, and ultimately achieve your goals. Moreover, a growth mindset fosters a love of learning and resilience, which are invaluable traits in today’s rapidly changing world.

How can you cultivate a growth mindset?

  • Embrace challenges: Instead of avoiding difficult tasks, see them as opportunities to learn and grow.
  • Learn from criticism: Rather than taking feedback personally, use it as a chance to improve and develop.
  • Persist in the face of setbacks: View failures as temporary setbacks and keep pushing forward.
  • Believe in the power of effort: Recognize that hard work and dedication can lead to improvement in any area.

By adopting a growth mindset, you can unlock your potential and achieve success beyond what you ever thought possible. So, the next time you face a challenge, remember: your abilities are not fixed – they are waiting to be developed through your efforts and determination.

A Story About History

Going Back Home

As I sit here packing my bags for an upcoming trip, there’s a whirlwind of emotions swirling within me. Soon, I’ll be embarking on a journey that holds immense significance to me and my identity. It’s not just any trip; it’s a pilgrimage back to my roots, back to the place I’ve always considered my true home – El Salvador.

Beautiful volcano in Cerro Verde National Park in El Salvador at sunset

Growing up as a Hispanic-American, my connection to El Salvador runs deep. Despite being born and raised in the United States, my heart has always remained intertwined with the vibrant culture, rich history, and warm embrace of my Salvadoran heritage. For me, El Salvador is more than just a place on a map; it’s a part of who I am, ingrained in the very fabric of my being.

This trip holds a special place in my heart, not only because I’ll be returning to the land of my ancestors but also because I’ll be doing so alongside my sisters and cousins. It’s a rare opportunity for us to come together, to reconnect, and to strengthen the bonds that tie us to our shared heritage. As we embark on this journey, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of gratitude for the chance to experience it with the people who understand me in ways that no one else can.

For me, staying connected to my Salvadoran roots isn’t just a choice; it’s a source of pride. It’s about honoring the sacrifices of those who came before me, preserving our traditions, and passing them down to future generations. Whether it’s through language, food, music, or customs, I’ve always strived to keep the flame of my culture burning bright within me.

As I prepare to step foot on Salvadoran soil once again, I’m filled with a mix of excitement, nostalgia, and anticipation. I can’t wait to breathe in the familiar scents of home, to savor the flavors of authentic pupusas, and to hug my family. I know that this trip will also be a journey of self-discovery, a chance to deepen my understanding of who I am and where I come from.

In a world that often feels increasingly divided, coming back to my roots reminds me of the power of connection, of the ties that bind us together across borders and boundaries. It’s a reminder that no matter where life may take me, El Salvador will always be a part of me, guiding me, grounding me, and reminding me of who I am and where I belong.

So as I embark on this adventure with my loved ones by my side, I do so with an open heart and a renewed sense of purpose. Because in returning to El Salvador, I’m not just going back home – I’m rediscovering a piece of myself, reclaiming my identity, and reaffirming the pride I feel in being Latina. And for that, I am eternally grateful.

Feel-Good Chemistry: Oxytocin, Cortisol, and You! 🫀🧬🧠

Hi to all of you! I want to talk about an intriguing subject I learned while reading Marian Rojas Estapé’s book “Find Your Vitamin Person” today. book on Amazon. But first, let’s clarify what these terms represent before we get started

Oxytocin  is a hormone that’s produced in the hypothalamus and released into the bloodstream by the pituitary gland. “love drug” or “love hormone”.

Cortisol is a steroid hormone that your adrenal glands, the endocrine glands on top of your kidneys, produce and release. Cortisol affects several aspects of your body and mainly helps regulate your body’s response to stress.

Promoting emotional well-being requires knowing how to control cortisol levels and increase oxytocin, especially in today’s stressful world. The biological indicator of empathy and emotional intelligence is oxytocin. Overwhelmed by anxieties, whether they are rooted in personal, professional, financial, or health-related issues, people frequently become caught up in a stress loop that prevents the release of oxytocin. This makes sense from an evolutionary standpoint; when there is a perceived threat to existence, the brain gives priority to overcoming the current problem.

This scenario can play out in a number of ways, such as when someone who is experiencing severe self-doubt or social anxiety seeks reassurance from a supportive person. Their decision-making becomes easier as a result of the relief they feel, which releases oxytocin and lowers cortisol levels. Being aware of and utilizing oxytocin’s advantages can help you effectively manage your feelings of fear, threat, and uncertainty. A hug or other show of affection can reduce the discomfort of being afraid and give you the confidence to face obstacles head-on. Understanding this brain process helps you get a better understanding of the experiences and reactions you have in life.

Fear and anxiety, however, can be reduced when one is able to release oxytocin in socially awkward or distressing situations. For example, let’s say you have a public presentation coming up and you’re nervous, causing your cortisol levels to spike. The unexpected ability of a supportive friend, peer, or coworker to make a friendly face can dramatically lower cortisol levels. The brain’s emotional center, the amygdala, slows down as a result, and you start to feel more assured and comfortable.
