My name is Sumaira Ahmed. I am a Communication major at University of Maryland College Park. I started my educational journey at Montgomery College. It was challenging going back to school after a 10-year gap. It took me awhile to get everything in order and have my credits transfer from the university I attended in my home country. Meanwhile, I started preparing for placement exams, while raising two toddlers. After two job changes, moving twice, and my youngest started school full time, I was able to go back to school. I initially thought to myself, “I had already studied this stuff, how hard could it be?”, but I was proved wrong. I was fortunate to attend Montgomery College, as I got a lot of help from my professors and peers in the challenges I encountered.
Since, an early age I was passionate about the fashion industry. In fact, I was doing my AA in Business, so I would go into fashion merchandising later. I realized that it is not that easy, if one wants to get into a good fashion school — the good schools are in New York and Los Angeles, and moving was not an option for me.
I learned about the Universities at Shady Grove (USG) and liked that it was a short commute from my home. I am really enjoying my classes and love how versatile the communication field is which will present a lot of job opportunities. I appreciate all the help I get from student service departments. I want to share my experiences with you and let you know about all the great things that USG has to offer. Happy Reading!
