Hello, my name is Astrid Cabrera, and I am a 22-year-old student at the University of Maryland, College Park at USG majoring in Biological Sciences. I was born and raised in Silver Spring, Maryland to a Salvadoran family. I am a first-generation college student and the oldest, in my family. As the oldest, all I accomplish is a new milestone and an example set for my younger siblings and cousins. I am the first to graduate high school, receive an associate’s degree, soon receive a bachelor’s degree, and in the future, the first doctor in the family. I am very excited about what is ahead of me.
My education is a large part of my life and I enjoy every aspect of it. This semester is my second to last at USG, but my journey began at Montgomery College where I started to pursue Biological Sciences and medicine. Many challenges come with this major, but I am always willing to work hard and move forward. Learning is a beautiful thing and I am thrilled to be preparing for my dream career in pediatrics!
As a USG blogger, I plan to write about the journeys of students and educators. I believe everyone has a story to share regarding successes and failures. Sharing these stories with others is a great way to motivate and inspire students of all backgrounds and majors. The connection and bonds formed through these stories can help us to feel connected with others during these COVID times, where the feeling of isolation is most prominent. I also plan to connect my position as a USG Ambassador and ACES student to the blog posts I write on Around the Grove, by sharing this amazing student resource with prospective students and families, so they too, can learn what the community at USG has to offer.
