Boost Your Career: The Power of Informational Interviews for Students

Hi, guys today I am going to talk about informational interviews and how it has been beneficial for me as a college student.

Source: Google Image

Informational interviews are a crucial tool for college students to gain insights into their desired career paths. These interviews allow students to learn about the day-to-day responsibilities, required skills, and potential challenges of specific roles from professionals working in the field.

As a college student, I’ve found informational interviews to be helpful. They’ve given me a better understanding of what those careers are actually like, helped me identify areas where I might need to build up my skills further, and enabled me to make valuable connections in my dream field. A huge benefit is that you can explore a potential career path without committing to a full-time job. By conversing with people already working in the field, I can assess if a particular career aligns with my interests, values, and long-term plans.

I think this is especially important given the changes in the job market. With the uncertain labor market, students must develop realistic career expectations and gain a good sense of the skills and experience employers are seeking. Using informational interviews will help students figure out how their studies and emerging skills match industry needs and better understand the job market.

For instance, when I started college, I considered a career in information technology but wasn’t sure which specific roles would be the best fit. By speaking with an IT professional, I learned about some of the different specialties within the field, such as software development, network administration, and technical support. This gave me a clearer understanding of the various paths I could pursue with an IT degree.

Doing informational interviews can also help students build connections that could lead to job openings later. Networking is super important these days, and these chats let students get a foot in the door and make a good impression with professionals in their dream fields.

Overall, informational interviews are a powerful tool that college students should utilize to gain insights, clarify their career goals, and develop a professional network.

Happy Halloween, Making it Stress-Free!

Happy Halloween everyone,

Today is a fun holiday where children can dress up, walk around in the evening to ask for candy, and show off their costumes. Families can also dress up to enjoy the festivities with their children. When I was younger, I looked forward to trick-or-treating, but as I got older and responsibilities got in the way, I traded in trick-or-treating for staying in, watching the children. I realized that trick-or-treating could be more stress-free, and people of all ages could still enjoy this holiday like the young children and celebrate the occasion.

Making it Stress-free
Recalling the standard five dimensions mentioned in the previous post:

Source: Dimensions of Well-being Health Education Prevention CSU https://images.app.goo.gl/77fAMM8zVTvkudiT7

Halloween is an evening where we could still use a break to dedicate to these dimensions and join in on the fun. Here are some ways:

  • A person can walk around with friends or family, dressed up or not- taking care of the social dimension by gathering with friends, the physical dimension by walking, the mental dimension by going out outside for air, the emotions by having fun with friends, and the spiritual dimension by being a person to be there for your younger sibling to take trick-or-treating or friends to hang with.
  • Handing out candies and treats at the door is also a fun and interactive way to take care of some dimensions of wellness, such as taking care of the social dimension by socializing and the mental and emotional dimensions by giving yourself a break
  • Arrange a self-care night to stay in, order pizza, cook/bake food, and with friends, take care of the social, emotional, mental, and spiritual dimensions by being surrounded by loved ones, taking a break, and lifting one’s spirits.

I recently started participating in the Teal Pumpkin Project, a movement offering alternative options (stickers, pencils, toys) for children with food allergies when trick-or-treating started by the Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE); the movement also works for children with diabetes, Celiac disease, or other restrictions.

Source: The Teal Pumpkin Project https://images.app.goo.gl/ZBHtbppqtzCbrAd69

It promotes inclusion and is a stress reliever for parents and children. Parents get stressed out taking their children trick-or-treating because they need to inspect what the child is grabbing, children trick-or-treating in groups do not want to be or feel excluded from going up to houses with friends, feel peer pressure despite knowing they can not take the candy or have to step away from do this fun activity with their friends. Participation in the Teal Pumpkin Project would

  • Help take care of the emotional and spiritual dimension of wellness because it relieves stress, finding meaning and purpose in knowing you are doing something to help the children not feel left out.
  • Reduce the stress of parents, including student parents at USG; the stress of sending children off to grab only candy is lifted, and you would help out the community

We can all enjoy the holiday and make it a stress-free Halloween. Happy Halloween everyone!

Colors of Fall: A Day in Harpers Ferry 🍂🍁

I visited the lovely West Virginia village of Harpers Ferry last weekend to take in the beauty of October. The hills and waters are covered with brilliant reds, oranges, and yellows as the leaves change, and something is fascinating about it. I went to breathe in the pure mountain air, relax from everyday activities, and restore a connection with nature…

Although Harpers Ferry is mostly known for its history, explorers and nature lovers will find enough to enjoy. The activities that followed helped to make my visit unforgettable:

  • Trail Hiking: Parts of this one trail are among the wonderful routes that are accessible from the town. There is something for everyone, whether you’re looking for a challenging hike or taking it easy with beautiful scenery.
  • Water Activities: Kayaking or fishing are enjoyable ways to enjoy the water while surrounded by autumn colors as the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers meet here.
  • Exploring Historic Sites: Walking through the historic downtown feels like stepping back in time. There are plenty of collections and points of interest where you can learn about Harpers Ferry’s role in American history.
  •  Local Shops & Food services: If you’re looking to relax, the local cafés and shops are perfect for a warm drink or unique memories.

The importance of slowing down and appreciating our surroundings was brought home to me by taking a break to explore a place like Harpers Ferry. I strongly suggest this small village if you’re considering an autumn break because of its picturesque surroundings and peaceful atmosphere.

ps: good luck with the upcoming midterms, we got this ❤

How to Budget in College

Budgeting might sound boring, but it’s actually super helpful. With a little planning, you can make sure you always have enough money for the things you need and even some extra for the things you want. Here are a few simple tips to help you budget as a college student.

1. Track Your Spending

First, know where your money is going. Track every dollar you spend for at least a month. You can use a notebook or any free apps. Write down everything, even small things like snacks or coffee. Once you see where your money goes, it’s easier to figure out where to save.

2. Make a Simple Budget

Start by writing down your monthly income, like money from a job, allowance, or financial aid. Then, list your main expenses. This could be rent, groceries, transportation, and entertainment. Set limits for each category and try to stick to it. If you’re not sure how much to set, use your tracked spending to help you estimate.

3. Limit Eating Out

Eating out is fun, but it can drain your budget fast. Instead of eating out all the time, try cooking at home. Even making simple meals can save you a lot of money. If you do eat out, try to limit it to once or twice a week, and maybe only on weekends.

4. Build an Emergency Fund

Unexpected costs always pop up. Maybe you need to buy a book for a class, fix a bike, or go to the doctor. Try setting aside even just $5 a week. It adds up, and you’ll thank yourself when an emergency comes.

5. Reward Yourself!

Sticking to a budget doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. Set small rewards, like a movie night or a new shirt, when you reach your budget goals. It keeps you motivated and makes budgeting feel less like a chore.

Budgeting doesn’t have to be hard. Start small, set limits, and watch your spending. With these tips, you can enjoy college without stressing about money.

Don’t let Midterms stop you from enjoying the fall scenery

As I sat under a tree waiting for a friend to finish her class, I noticed that almost all the trees had changed colors. I remember waiting impatiently for the leaves to turn orange, but now seeing them starting to fall made me want to go back in time and live it from the start.

Although it is the midterm season and I have been craving some relaxation time, I realized I’m not enjoying the present enough. Fall is one of my favorite seasons mainly because it is full of holidays and fun activities. I have decided to not only stay on top of my studies but to also make time for this colorful fun season.

Here are a few tips and tricks I’ll be using to enjoy the season a bit more while staying focused on my classes:

Set Realistic Goals

As a full-time student with a part-time job on weekends, time management is the KEY to my success. So, by setting realistic goals on when I would finish a certain task and allowing to leave some room for potential procrastination, I will at least get a clear understanding of my schedule to determine when and where I can enjoy my time outside of my responsibilities.

    Incorporate Short Breaks

While studying or simply completing my assignments, it is best to use a study method. I usually use the Pomodoro technique: Study for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break. During these breaks, I take time to stretch, grab a snack, or enjoy a quick walk outside to soak in the fall atmosphere.

      Mix in Fall Activities

This is a photo I took a few days ago while studying with a friend. I not only made some great memories but also managed to get some classwork done.

Making time over the weekend or after classes to recharge my batteries. Whether it’s visiting a pumpkin patch, exploring a farm, hiking a mountain to see the beautiful fall colors, or just simply grabbing a hot cup of apple cider with my friends, these experiences can boost dopamine and provide a mental break and of course to have a fresh set of memories. Other than that I also enjoy studying outdoors with a pretty view to help me stay motivated without feeling overwhelmed by my assignments.

        Practice Mindfulness and Self-Care

Mindfulness and self-care are something I am recently getting into, and what better time to start than during my favorite season? The best form of mindfulness for me is to go for a morning run, meditate, or just go for a walk with family or friends. Not only will I be enjoying nature but also reconnect with myself and the loved ones around me. Additionally, prioritize self-care activities like exercise, sleep, and healthy eating to maintain my energy levels.

While these are just a few tips and tricks I will be bringing into my lifestyle to enjoy the fall season, it is very important to make time for important things that matter the most in life. Time is something we can’t hold onto—what stays with us are the memories we create along the way. So, let’s enjoy the most of today for a better tomorrow 😊and don’t forget to ace those midterms!💯

How to Travel for Free and Network: My First Industry Conference

Travel for Free: The World of Conference Scholarships

Many professional conferences are held annually across various fields. This post will focus on STEM and tech conferences, as that is where my knowledge lies. So, what is a conference scholarship? Many institutions, including universities, Google, and non-profit organizations such as Rewriting the Code, provide funds to bring underrepresented individuals to these conferences…for free! My scholarship was awarded by the Iribe Initiative for Inclusion and Diversity in Computing (i4c) at the University of Maryland, College Park. The applications are open to students annually, and you only need to fill out one form to be considered for many of the conferences. Each scholarship offers different perks, so it is important to know what you will be getting.

What was included on my scholarship?

          • Plane Tickets
          • Transportation to and from airports
          • Conference registration
          • Hotel

Moreover, conferences usually take place in the fall, so applications are generally open during late spring and summer. Check out these pages to learn more about and apply for conference scholarships:

          oSTEM 14th Annual Conference

This past weekend, I participated in my first conference: the oSTEM 14th Annual Conference. Out in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (oSTEM) is an organization for queer students and professionals in the STEM field. Their annual conference aims to connect queer and trans professionals and empower us to seek new opportunities.

          My Experience at oSTEM

Spending my week at this conference was a turning point for me. I have worked in the hospitality industry for years, and for years, I have proudly worked as a waitress at conferences. For the first time, I was not serving. For the first time, I was in the room as a professional. I would be lying if I said it was not a mix of emotions, ranging from nervousness to excitement. Listening to others’ journeys and having the opportunity to connect with industry professionals was an important opportunity for the development of my confidence as a tech professional. My favorite part was the oSTEM career fair, where I met two people who got interviews for internships on the spot! This is the power of taking up space. Make yourself seen. Apply for a conference now (or at least save the date for next year)!

Watch a Chilling, Scary Movie. If you enjoy getting spooked from the couch, 2024 is an excellent year for horror movie fans. This year proved itself to be one of the best. Not only are this year’s movies “gory”, they also deliver psychologically thrilling, thought-provoking messages regarding today’s society. Here are some of the best 2024 horror movies that came out this year:

            • Late Night with the Devil: a talk show host gets more than he bargains for when he invites a “possessed” young girl (is she?).
            • The Substance: Elisabeth Sparkle is replaced as the host of her Aerobics TV show. She then finds a mysterious “substance” that seemingly provides an all-in-one solution. However, she also realizes the consequences of aging.
            • MaXXXine: part of the X film series, follow Max as she proceeds with her dreams of becoming an actress in this thrilling slasher
            • Lisa Frankenstein: a gory rom-com featuring a teenage girl, Lisa, attempting to assimilate her newly-revived zombie boyfriend.

Head Down to DC for a Ghost Walk. Immerse yourself into one of the history of D.C.’s most haunting neighborhoods through a nighttime walking tour. These tours offer both spooky tales and historical insights, making them exciting whether you go alone or with some friends. There are many tour companies, so I’ve chosen some highlights here:

            • Capitol Hill Haunts: Explore the Lincoln Conspiracy trials and the Demon Cat that guards Capitol Hill.
            • DC Ghosts: Hit up the White House, the Dolley Madison House (James Madison’s wife), and the Decatur House.
            • Ghosts of Georgetown: Learn about the War of 1812, Theodosia Burr Alston, and the harbor.

Day in my life as an Information Science Student

My day involves a variety of activities, both academic and personal. Mondays are usually the busiest, and to prepare for it starts the day before. Sunday evening, I prepare my lunch and lay out my clothes to ensure a smooth start to the week. My alarm rings at 5:30 AM and I quickly get out of bed, go through my morning routine, and head to the kitchen to brew a strong cup of coffee, my essential fuel for the day ahead.

By 8 AM, I am on my way to campus, my class on Monday starts at 10 AM. The class is INST-335 Management and Teamwork in which we discuss various aspects of managing people and projects. During this 2-hour 30-minute session, the professor utilizes a mix of lectures, small group discussions, and hands-on activities to help us develop critical skills. After a short break, I head to Building 4 for the Macklin Public Speaking Program from 1 PM to 2 PM. This program focuses on honing our public speaking abilities through practice, peer feedback, and coaching.

Typically, I reserve the afternoons for library work and catching up on readings. After the Speaking Program, I grab a light lunch and head to the Priddy Library to work on my research papers and projects. I love all the available resources at the library, such as the quiet study spaces, comprehensive databases, and knowledgeable librarians who are always willing to provide guidance. By 5 PM, I wrap up my library work and head home.

The evenings are reserved for personal time. I try to balance academic work with leisure activities like reading novels, cuddling with my cats, and catching up with friends. By 9:30 PM, I wind down, prepare for the next day, and try to be in bed by 10:30 PM to ensure I get enough rest.

This routine may vary depending on the day of the week and my workload, but the core elements of attending classes, utilizing campus resources, and balancing academic and personal time remain consistent.

            Studying before Class
